According to BusinessKorea, the South Korean government plans to invest approximately 1 trillion Korean won to commercialize artificial intelligence (AI) chips and develop next-generation chip manufacturing processes.
The report states that AI chips are a system semiconductor with AI computing speed and power efficiency. It is expected that by 2025, the global market for AI chips will grow at an annual rate of 37.5%, reaching $51.9 billion.
It is reported that the plan aims to develop world-class AI chip and atomic level chip manufacturing technology, promoted by the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy. The plan is to invest 1.01 trillion won, of which 521.6 billion won will come from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (2020 2026), and the remaining 488 billion won will come from the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology (2020 2029).
In addition, the government has selected 91 companies, 29 universities, and 8 research institutes to carry out the 45 tasks of the project. Among them, there are 27 system semiconductor (including AI chips) tasks and 18 chip manufacturing process tasks. It is worth mentioning that tasks related to system semiconductors are mainly concentrated in five fields, including automobiles, biotechnology, IoT household appliances, robotics, and public use.
